If you are learning or just starting with yoga and meditation, it can be challenging to maintain a consistent practice.

If you have just returned home from your summer holidays, going back to your routine can be dreading; Transitioning to a new season may have effects in our bodies as well.

Even for practitioners who have been practicing for few years now, the energy and enthusiasm wane and it’s completely normal. Let’s face it, we’re all humans, and sometimes we just want the easy and comfortable patterns.

However, continuing with our yoga and meditation practice will help us more in grounding and establishing a healthy, balanced body and mind.

After seven years into this discipline, I made it a point to maintain my regular practice because I see my mat as my sanctuary. Coming back to my mat everyday means coming back to love, my truth and sanity.

Here are the 5 tips to cultivate yoga and meditation practice on a regular basis:

1. Make a schedule and stick to it.

Make a schedule for your practice and stick to it. According to experts, it takes 21 days to form a habit. Follow a schedule until it becomes your routine.

If you’re beginning to learn meditation, you may start 10 minutes every morning as soon as you get up. Eventually, your body and mind will get used to this period and will crave for more time of calmness and quietude.

2. Share your goals to people.

Sharing to other people your goals makes it a public oath and adds pressure on you. As a result, you commit to your schedule because most of the time, we wouldn’t want to fail in the eyes of other people. Hence, you will make the time and dedicate yourself in the schedule no matter how busy life gets.

3. Follow a guide or an inspirational teacher.

Everyone needs a teacher. Even the most advanced practitioners took the time to learn from knowledgeable and highly experienced teachers or gurus. Check out a local studio class near your home. Following a guide or a sequence online is also helpful but it is better to stick with a local teacher for better assistance. Coming personally to a yoga class just makes it totally different as you feel the positive vibration and healing energy of the whole class.

4. Explore and experiment!

If you have been practicing for quite awhile now, try a new style of yoga, find a yoga community, search for a yoga retreat or attend workshops or trainings every now and then. Be curious and keep yourself eager to learn more!

This will keep you interested with the practice and excited as you look forward to what you have signed up for.

5. Enjoy the journey!

Yoga is not really about being able to do the difficult asanas; It’s about the person you’re becoming throughout the regular practice. A consistent practice will open your heart more, create a space in the body, focus your mind in the present moment and will make you prioritize the most significant aspects of your life.

Remember, if you skipped a class because you were just too tired or maybe sick, it’s okay! Keep going and try again the next day! You didn’t fail at all so be patient and kind to your body. Your body will respond to what it needs and eventually relish on the therapeutic benefits of this practice.
